I'm usually late to the party about anything contemporary, but this one I couldn't help pouncing on. Expecting a bittersweet final wrap-up of Lyra's story, one I've loved to bits for so long now.

This is veering steadily Twilightwards, and I'm not happy about it. I'll finish the damn thing, but I'm not likely to pick up the rest of the series unless she manages a rather spectacular save towards the end.

What a ride! This book is so dense I need a breather. I'll be back eventually though. Brilliant stuff.

Ayla goes on to learn about consent and invents the dog. Less corny upon reread than I had anticipated, yet there are som truly cringe-worthy moments. Jondalar is a real man-baby at times.

3rd reading, still absolutely amazing. This time I even think I managed to keep track of all the characters. It remains the queerest novel I've ever read. Clive Barker makes fiercely original use of the fantasy genre, and I love him for it. Dark, dense and rich wordbuilding with a spiritual epic of a narrative to go with it.

"It was pure invention, of course, like all my favourite things. Including myself."

Ten pages into the book and I'm already in tears. I think I will enjoy this book.

After five years of hanging out at Goodreads I discover that status updates is a thing. Woo! For your information, I am currently down with the first (and I sincerely hope the last) headcold of this fall. On the plus side, the chance to get a lot of reading done has been thrust upon me. Snivelling, fever and coughing aside, there are worse fates.
