It's not thrilling or fast-paced, but Merga is a good, plain writer who excels at getting a lot of information across in an engaging and digestible manner.

Lots of really interesting research to support the truth that librarians and readers have known forever: good readers are good writers, learners, and citizens, and it takes encouragement from all levels at all times to create good readers.

When a book is on my Kindle I just go ahead and start reading it without refreshing my memory of plot or anything, so I'm not sure what I'm getting into - but I'm liking it so far!

This feels like a book i can mostly only read in a bath, and somehow both Ms. Jackson and Ms. Hand would understand and appreciate that.

But I had to interrogate this feeling and trust when I got annoyed at a character pushing back against cleary established rules and looking for answers (things I usually admire!) - Killian is annoying for sure, but it wasn’t just that spilling over to her actions…
There’s no reason to trust the Kmet! They’re intentionally obtuse and entered into a contract with a species that had no idea to what they were agreeing!

It’s so interesting - since the start of this, my inclination was automatically to be friendly towards the Kmet; they’re inscrutable, of course, but they’re aliens so that tracks. I even scoffed a little when <spoiler>people floated the idea that the Kmet were killing the planets</spoiler>; why would we suspect such a close ally like that?

Bad sign: I’m more than halfway through and it doesn’t look like anything’s going to wrap up anytime soon…

I REALLY liked Period Street Station so I was trepidatious about starting this one - so far, though I'm liking it.

I have very strong but very vague memories of reading this in early middle school - it took me a long time to track down! It's a lot more... dreamy and sparse than I remember. I think I'm liking it but when I've tried to read it I don't think I've had the right mindset.

My mental health has not been there lately, so I've been taking it easy and truing to be gentle with myself... it's comforting that Small emphasizes that everyone makes mistakes and even if I'm not in love with my finished product it's all a step towards progress

It's not that it's bad - the writing is very good (if a little purple, but I don't mind it), the emotions are raw and real, the grief and sadness and anxiety and confusion are palpable and suffocating - but it's not at all what I expected.
