Wry humour, breathtaking imagination and the obligatory damning critique of religion make for another highly entertaining read by Banks. However, the Culture novels seem to become increasingly lengthy and meandering as the series progresses. The Hydrogen Sonata does build to a typically thrilling and explosive finale, but like other later novels in this series it just seems to take an awful long time getting there.
