The second run is far better than the first. More emphasis on action than on description. Less rape, too.

What is already striking me is Jack's terrible narcissism and his actual great writing ability. When he describes places and things external to himself, he's fantastic. But, when he describes people or interactions he has, he's a self-absorbed jerk and it wrecks his writing. Kudos to Jason Arnopp for creating this talented, terrible person.

The book is getting better now that it has moved into sciencey things and out of backstory/looks.

Again, this greatly assumes a male reader. When women are mentioned as possible space heroes, it feels edited in or is just in the art, not the text. This is a funny book and nicely researched, but still.

I'm a bit annoyed with how obviously this book assumes a male reader. While female characters do get name checked occasionally, the text really only considers men. Women mostly get referenced in terms of sex.

Decided I wanted something fun to read.

My dental hygienist asked me what this book was about when she caught me reading it. I just laughed. This book defies brief summary.

Book 1 done.

Things are more coherent now. The various plot lines make sense and the book is starting to really hang together--for all that it remains incredibly odd.

I'm about 20 pages in. So far? Very episodic.
