If you LOVE military hardware, ships of the line, descriptions of armaments and tactics, there's a lot here to love. If you're like me, however, it means there are paragraphs and sometimes whole pages that you skim through quickly. I've read this series before and like it a lot, but a first-time reader who isn't into the military stuff will need to hang on until Chapter 7, when the characters and story take off.

Parts one and two a bit slow, providing background. Part three flows much better, and is a good storyline.

Breezy, breathless writing style carries you along quickly.

Mildly interesting with good observations of American life, but...meh.
