This is such slow going and I'm completely uninterested in the story. Tempted to quit now.

"...if you live in a modern city and you have a credit card and an internet connection, you don't really need to ask anyone for help. Google Maps gives you directions. Yelp offers recommendations. [...] This is amazing and terrible. It's like we're in a race to prove that we can make other humans unnecessary."

"If you must use these services, however, and you hope to do so without ceding autonomy over your time and attention, it's crucial to understand that this is not a casual decision. You're instead waging a David and Goliath battle against institutions that are both impossibly rich and intent on using this wealth to stop you from winning."

...this philosophy has nothing against technology--so long as the tools are put to use to improve your real-world social life as opposed to diminishing it.

Newport is a more judgmental Marie Kondo.

While the book is lovely, I am vaguely unsettled by what we are calling "authenticity" here. What do we mean when we say that someone is "authentic"?

I've never heard of Tasker or her Instagram before. I'm not certain it's ever come up in my IG Explore, or if it did, I scrolled right past it.

I can agree that her pictures are lovely, but they do not strike me as "authentic" as I would think of it.

Oooh. Thus far, this is a Dresden Files copy in which Harry works for Marcone? Cringing.

Only a quarter of the way into it and Hagerman has only talked to adults. I'm hoping she gets around to chatting with children at some point soon. Also, I am frustrated at where she's going with this thing. The goal-post-moving for "good allyship" is discouraging. But perhaps this is her intention.

Listening to the audiobook version. About five chapters in, and I wish Gannett had chosen a different reader for this. And, it's only rehashed works I've already read. Looking forward to whenever he gets to the meat of his take on this idea.

I think I may need to come back to this one. It's beautifully written, but I found it hard to get into it.

"We've professionalized music so much that we discourage people from making it for fun."

Also, anecdote about William Hung singing in pitch to "She Bangs" was very interesting!

Good read. Not really a straight-through read. More a pick up and read in small chunks.

This is the longest it has taken me to read an SGE book. I'm so worried about Tedros and Agatha that I'm taking it a chapter at a time because I have no idea how they're going to get out of this mess!
