The setting details are so clunky. Blegh. I get why this is a popular book, but if my book club hadn’t picked it, I would have given it up at the start of Part 2.

This book is a reaction to the 2016 election. How did we do this to ourselves, AGAIN?!

The story tracks our current lives experience in a way that’s almost too close to reality.

The characters in this book are wonderful! McBride writes with sympathy and love, and as a reader I care about EVERYONE in this story, from the drunk at the novel’s center, to the gangsters and drug dealers, to the church ladies and cops.

Wow! Intricately crafted stories that follow the threads of family and history. “Yaw’s” story is my favorite.
