I already know I'll give this book 1 lousy star.

I don't see how this is humorous. still stick with it because of popular opinion, but the prospect isn't bright.

what annoys me the most is the non-alignment between the narration and the paintings that it is discussing. for example, the potato eaters are printed on p.96, while people's opinions and assessments of it are printed on p.159-175... switching back and forth is frustrating.

'Vanka' definitely rings lots of bells for me. perhaps there was an excerpt of it from junior high school days?

I definitely consider this book categorized as humorous.

the lack of punctuation marks is driving me crazy. not to mention the constant jumping between the present and the past of narrators... so far, I have had no idea what's going on.

a funny part:
"[...] we stopped and gaped at a huge room that contained the skeletons of forty horses. Apparently the Laughing Prince had intended to ride in style in his next life, and it wasn't the only horses he rode. The prince almost approached Master Li's level of swearing as we entered the Hall of Concubines and found forty small skeletons neatly arranged on forty beds."

Wonderful story with just the right pace. The cast is easy to relate to (at least that's my personal impression).

It struck me as plain stupid to do what the men of Prentisstown had done. I mean! (spoiler alert) What the hell could they have been thinking? They must've thought they could clone themselves...

And I wasn't very fond of the girl, too. I found it very odd to stay silent for days, when obviously the boy didn't intend to do her harm.
