Not a spoiler alert! If it’s been a year since you read the first book in this series, I recommend reading it again to familiarize yourself with the characters. Also, get a hard hat for all the monkey wrenches thrown into the investigation and a spinal collar for the twists and turns.

The main character in this book is named Wilbur Budd. That is a great name for a character!

I am really enjoying this book so far! Someone told me that because it is not her typical historical fiction book, some readers were disappointed. The last book of hers that I read was very long. This is not. That may be a factor in why I am enjoying it.

The one thing I always appreciate about these books is that they have short chapters. There may be 113 chapters in the book, but they are short chapters. It’s purely a psychological boost when you see how far along you are in such a short time.

This is a fascinating look at how three young men’s lives were guided by family history, circumstances, and life choices, resulting in one becoming a doctor, one becoming a police officer, and one becoming a murderer. The author begins where the three lives intersect and works her way back to learn each family’s history.

Told in first person, this reminds me of a Mickey Spillane novel. At any moment, I expect the detective to refer to a woman as a dame.

One piece of advice for anyone who wants to read this: don’t Google the characters. It contains spoilers!
