This is a fascinating look at how three young men’s lives were guided by family history, circumstances, and life choices, resulting in one becoming a doctor, one becoming a police officer, and one becoming a murderer. The author begins where the three lives intersect and works her way back to learn each family’s history.

Told in first person, this reminds me of a Mickey Spillane novel. At any moment, I expect the detective to refer to a woman as a dame.

One piece of advice for anyone who wants to read this: don’t Google the characters. It contains spoilers!

Come for the history and law lessons. Stay for the snark. This book really needs to be available on audio. I can just about hear Mr Mystal’s righteous indignation while reading this.
