Most interesting. It is the first totally illustrated and at the same time written book I have ever experienced.. I'm finding it moving rapidly and easy to understand as well. Certainly not your average picture book. Lots of fun!

Good so gar

Too wordy. Could not finish.

Having watched a recent film on the life of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) made me want to reread this masterpiece. The foresight that this author shows .in this work is amazing, tho not an easy. book to read since he uses the language of the blacks of that era as well as many of the unread whites. A most interesting and educational view of many of our past beliefs.

Fascinating sci-fi

A curio us book written in 1921 or 1922 and the language use is difficult in this present day. .

VERY funny and informative.

So far I can only say this is a fine piece of literature. Many comments (almost all female) are giving this book only 1 or 2 stars and complain that the story is simply too depressing. In my view the problem is with the reader, not the author. Read this with an eye to fine literary work.

This is a most interesting piece of work especially for one who has been thru the process of building a house in a fairly remote location, as I have.
The difference for me is the fact that I did not have an architect or even a crew but built it all myself with me wife's help. Of course it's Annie Proulx's magnificent writing skill that really defines its beauty.

Delightfully humorous

Never has anyone managed to portray the characters of the two central people in this book more completely and perfectly. Helprin is. A descriptive master. I love this book and wish it were even longer than its 700+ pages.
