Charles' melodramatic, self-indulgent ruminations—along with his characterisation of the women in his life as feeble, furtive, or just plain unstable—makes for somewhat difficult reading. It's hard to sympathise with him, although I suspect that's the point. There's also something to be said about the theatrical undertone to his (arguably unreliable) narrative. All very intriguing, especially from a female author!
