This may contain spoilers, but at this point I’m just piecing things together from context. I’m about three‑quarters of the way through the book, and I don’t find the protagonist to be particularly protagony. He doesn’t feel heroic and honestly not like a particularly good thief either. I’m fairly certain he took the stone, and I’m pretty sure I know exactly when.

I’m only about a quarter of the way through The Thief, so I don’t know if what I’m feeling is real. But at this point, it feels like the narrator is deliberately keeping things vague—giving surface-level details and not sharing his actual thoughts or feelings. I’m not sure yet if this is intentional on the author’s part because I’ve never read her before. But I feel like a big plot twist is coming.
