The first part, set in Greenland, is about 10% really interesting detail about living in Greenland and its history, bogged down in a lot of boring or irrelevant musings and conversation. After chapter 1, I started skimming. Story has just shifted to Provence. Yeah!!

Engrossing until I reached the part where an Allied underground resistance agent is betrayed, captured and the instruments of his imminent torture are described. I skipped the next several chapters and put continuing on hold to listen to something completely different. A month later, I’m having difficulty generating the enthusiasm to continue.

From the way this book started, I thought I somehow read the incorrect blurb. But no, its detailed backstory that’s glossed over in the blurb. Hanging in there for the ghost story.

Excellent audio version narration. Story is engaging so far, in both present time and flashback segments.

Rereading after 15 years. I had forgotten how instantly consuming this story is, and how satisfying the writing. It’s been a long time since I stayed up until 1am reading because I couldn’t put it down.

Compelling. Moves along briskly.

I got stuck after a sad occurrence and needed to move on to lighter fare. May revisit after I read her latest memoir about her father’s life in Africa.

I am jumping back and forth, avoiding the WW2 death camp scenes which I respect but do not care to read. Already read the ending and going back now to fill in some blanks.
