For a while, I thought I was reading another mid-life crisis book about a man with a sex drive who can't be happy (I'm talking to you John Updike and Philip Roth), but Brodesser-Akner manages to intervene in rather than to join that band of merry masculine complainers with some perspectival shifts that up the ante on talking about marriage, money, and modernity. Sometimes a little flimsy, but provocative and real.

Great novella and slightly disappointing stories afterward. Slick, brisk, but maybe soulless.

There's nothing like a good thrille

He was the master of the unspoken assumption, the missed chan e, and the faint hope.

There were moments when I felt a little at a loss (but never unengaged), but it's accumulative effect is a delicate exploration of "malaise," and Percy manages to convey the "modern condition" with characterization so subtle that the novels's personages feel as inevitable and as mysterious as real people do even to themselves.

Solid historical mystery.

A contemplative piece, one that many might find dull, but I liked its delicacy and humanity.

It offers a beautiful truth indeed, about consciousness, conscience, the complexity that troubles the line between human beings and other animals, and about memory. It changed me to read it.

I gave up.

So far. every sentence of this book is like a diamond in a shaft of sunlight.
