The Heart's Invisible Furies
Off to a quirky and enjoyable start, but starting to feel sloggish. Somehow this reminds me of all those J.P. Donleavy books I read in my youth, which seem to have fallen into obscurity and neglect. Sadly, I must say.

The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. (D.O.D.O., #1)
There's certainly a whole lot of Schrodinger going on in the first 75 pages.
Okay, 200 pages in, things are starting to happen, and Melisande is a charming narrator.

The preface and first chapter are pretty darn engaging.

This reminds me of Rebecca, but without central heating.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)
At 18% - I'm liking this so far, not having that slow start problem that's been an issue for me lately, although the first couple chapters are exposition-city. Lots of foreshadowing and hints of an interestingly troubled past for MC Rosemary.

I seem to feel every book I've read lately gets off to a slow start, maybe it's me that's slow to ignite, lol. Anyway, here I am at halfway, and feeling like the story is just getting started.

I'm somewhat astonished that a book featuring a rather lengthy description of someone unhappily reading the Essays of Montaigne has been on the bestseller list for 50 weeks. Maybe I'll get with the beat ...

What if Herman Melville wrote a book, but instead of whales it was coffee? Mokha Dick? Srsly tho.

Wait wut? 23 years just passed? That was a hell of a chapter break (and a bit of an unremarked upon heartbreak). Maybe I've been reading too many romance novels (if there's such a thing as too much of a good thing), but my favorite story element seems to have atrophied, withered and blown away like the blossoms of an apple tree in a spring storm.
