also potentially the most predictable book ever (not just because of its Austen ties) but it’s so good I really like it

yes I’m aware this is the longest a book has taken me to finish in YEARS but man it’s worth it

I think it’s *very* interesting that the things people criticize RF Kuang for (ie her positionality, her academic status, etc) are the exact things she calls out in this book as being the morally-grey/duplicitious areas of academia

genuinely how do you write a book this layered with political messaging yet still incorporate fantastical elements without it feeling overbearing/dense

yes I am still reading this book and it is brilliant but life (and library loans) keeps getting in the way of me reading this faster

the other problem is that Matt haig’s nonfiction is written in the same tone as his fiction and it works better in the nonfiction genre

the problem is…before the coffee gets cold does this plot so much better across an entire SERIES of books

Matt haig pls redeem yourself I want to like your fiction
