I wanted to read this to better understand frameworks for resisting as an educator. I loved the concepts of the undercommons and fugitive study but I was hanging on by a thread of meaning for the entire read. I understand that there’s something poetic and genius about what they’ve done-in some chapters I found myself both not understanding intellectually but intuiting emotionally some new understanding of study

Delightfully freaky, deliciously weird. Some of the most interesting descriptions of sex I’ve read! (Will never forget origami iykyk) - I went into this book not really knowing what it was about and I’m glad, so I suggest not reading long reviews beforehand just dive in!

Such a gorgeous memoir in essays. It worked so well both as individual essays and as a cohesive whole. Instead of chronology it was more like a palimpsest of different layers, with themes accumulating meaning with each new anecdote. This commitment to truth-telling! This commitment to awe! Inspiring and earnest without feeling cheesy. Absolutely beautiful!!

I picked this up after attending a mind blowing lecture by Dr. Benjamin on racism in technology. This book takes a much wider lens and explores racial injustice across areas including healthcare, education, & labor. I sometimes felt overwhelmed by the barrage of information spanning different historical periods, regions, industries, etc. but it all cohered into a message about how small daily actions create change.

Helpful philosophy and practice of presence!

Believe the hype! This book is searingly beautiful. I listened on audiobook in 3 days, rapt. Kiese’s voice narrating is completely captivating. His use of repetition and cadence makes the whole book feel like a poem. Also the dialogue! Both feels true to life and transcendentally musical. One to return to.

I have no cable for the summer, so The Windfall is like my nightly television show. I can't remember a time I've been so excited to get back to a book!
