This would be a great book club read to discuss issues of disability and ableism, religious symbolism - the ooloi (agender/transgender aliens) appear to disfigured humans taught to fear the alien race as devils yet experience fear, awe and acceptance similar to when angels appear in the bible, LGBTQ identity, migration issues and poverty. Really current topics despite being published in 1989.

It takes me much longer to read short story collections, I’m not sure why I keep picking them up, but a few in Danielle Evans’ collection so far are truly worthwhile.
I just finished Why Won’t Women Just Say What They Want, which was deeply powerful. It felt inspired by the #MeToo movement. The layers of casual harm to women and the performative absolution sought by the protagonist struck deep.

Loved the first couple of chapters but Chapters 3-5 were less clear and I longed for more context and depth (maybe it’s just I’m less familiar with that period of history but it felt rather glossy).

Read chapter 2 as supplementary assignment in legal course on Sex Discrimination. Hope to read more once time allows; very well written.
