I am very slowly moving along with this. Don't think it's a fault of the book per se as I am distracted, however, as it's so disjointed my distractions can easily pull me away.

A complete, and not surprising, tonal shift from the LOTR.

So far it's interesting and painting a very good picture of the place & people's temperament.

I'm almost getting a sense of De Bernieres's Latin American trilogy but with a greater realism to it, which likely tracks, given the lack of Magic Realism (at least so far, I don't know what happens in this book at all).

Again - despite knowing the story I am so gripped by it.

I am hanging on the stories they're sharing amongst themselves, despite having just read them all myself - it has also given me an appreciation of the decisions Jackson made in the films to give moments more resonance et cetera.

Might finish it completely tonight. I think ROTK might be the best book..... It's tough.

And it's obviously Shelob and not whatever guesswork my last updated contained.

Frodo has a lot more doubt and clarity over Gollum than is portrayed in the film(s).

Merry and Pippin may be perceived as plucky comic relief but Samwise The Stouthearted is hilarious, especially when talking to someone of higher rank, and never failing to tell of the pearls of wisdom his Ol' Gaffer states on every occasion.
