After reading Ham on Rye, it becomes apparent that this is Bukowski’s sophomore novel. The chapters are short, the contents are less insightful. There’s not as much of a protagonist to invest in so far.

Haven’t been reading, want to finish by tomorrow.

I used to go to the park and read Mary Oliver.
I listened to the birds sing,
and read about dying streams.
The creaking of rusty swings.
I thought, “Maybe I’ve lived 1,000 lifetimes.”

One was enough for me.

“I knew I was strong, and maybe like they said, "crazy." But I had this feeling inside of me that something real was there.”

Henry Chinaski has been withdrawn from high school because he is covered in acne and boils. An arduous childhood with little love, and the only humor being that of the character building variety. When’s this guy going to catch a break? A true underdog, he doesn’t think he needs one.

Reading stuff I’ve had leftover on the shelf for a decade.

Full of the possibly-medicated degenerate characters in the seemingly ugly world that Chuck likes to build for them.
