Haven’t annotated a book this much since I started reading again.

Kerouac writes long eloquent sentences (2 sentences easily filling an entire page) with a variety of punctuation and a diverse vocabulary. His descriptions are full of a lust for life, the same as his characters.

Started thrifting books recently. Am I interested in Ayn Rand’s catalogue? Not really. But I got a nice copy of, “We the Living” for 99 cents anyways. Can’t beat that.

A couple poems here and there.

After reading Ham on Rye, it becomes apparent that this is Bukowski’s sophomore novel. The chapters are short, the contents are less insightful. There’s not as much of a protagonist to invest in so far.

I used to go to the park and read Mary Oliver.
I listened to the birds sing,
and read about dying streams.
The creaking of rusty swings.
I thought, “Maybe I’ve lived 1,000 lifetimes.”

One was enough for me.

“I knew I was strong, and maybe like they said, "crazy." But I had this feeling inside of me that something real was there.”

Henry Chinaski has been withdrawn from high school because he is covered in acne and boils. An arduous childhood with little love, and the only humor being that of the character building variety. When’s this guy going to catch a break? A true underdog, he doesn’t think he needs one.

Reading stuff I’ve had leftover on the shelf for a decade.
