Although I knew that finances were a large part of the story line in Jane Austen's novels (just as big as love), it has been really brought home to me while listening to Persuasion. The first three chapters are essentially about the fortunes--or lack thereof--of the Elliot family. The lives of women were particularly precarious during the time period as they had little choice / chance beyond a "good" marriage.
