This is a well written book with fascinating characters and a compelling story. I was captivated from the beginning. However, I have to DNF this. Although my rating was well on its way to a 4-5 stars, the developing theme has gotten too close to incidents from my childhood, and I just can't continue. I loved this book right up to the point where my stomach knotted up. NO reflection on the book.

Wow, this book has surprised me, really good so far, immediately swept up in the story. Kind of like Forging Zero meets The Hunger Games.

Finished the 2nd book last night. Sometimes this book gets so convoluted, that I get tired of it and want to put it down for good. Even though I like most of the main characters, I can't say they feel real to me. There's a couple I'd be sad about if they die. But every time I decide to quit this series, I pick it up and start reading again, and it's just good enough to keep me going. It's not great, just good.

I am putting this book down now. Lots of people like this series, and I feel a little guilty for not finishing, but, well, I just don't want to.

Coming off such outstanding books as the last two I've read, this is just average writing, a not-that-compelling story. And prolific grammar, spelling, punctuation mistakes and misused words jerk me right out of the story and make me want to throw my Kindle out the window.

The proofreader in me is going a little crazy with this book. Constant punctuation mistakes and omissions cause me to stop and read sentences over again so they make sense. Occasional misuse of words (i.e. "then" used instead of "than"); weird divisions of words at the end of text ("myth-" at the end of a line, followed by the "s" alone at the beginning of the next line...these things jerk me out of the story. sigh..

Excellent book, as beautifully researched and developed as "Pillars of the Earth," the first book in this series. A massive book, though, as was Pillars. According to my Kindle, I've completed 44% of the book, but I still have 11.5 hours of reading left before I finish. O.o

Enjoyable so far. Maria V. Snyder is one of my fave authors, one of the best at creating young women protagonists with emerging powers and really good at world creation. The heroine in this series, which takes place in interstellar space - a major departure for Snyder - is a bit too "teenager-y" for me. Put it down for now to finish another series.
