I'm getting too old and sentimental for this. It's too goddamn cynical in every aspect. Too close to modern day sensibilities in that way, I think. No wonder they dialed it down for the show.

I thought Kovacs was similar to Harry Dresden in manner, being a first-person gritty smartass constantly cracking (shitty) jokes, but I was a bit hasty. Well, or Morgan is a much better writer than Butcher, because it's not THAT grating. Otherwise, the story has all the hallmarks of cyberpunk. Simultaneously oppressive, disturbing and appealing.

Strike three: what sort of a madwoman imagines her own grandmother advising her to "ride him like a stallion"? That's it for this book.

Strike two. It's very jarring when somebody is written as extremely inoffensive and cloyingly nice, and then BOOM, swerves wildly into having dirty dreams about a woman and THEN, as if being written as nice and decent gives the author full sleaze licence, becomes instantly over-the-top horny. Hold on to your genitals my guy, we're only a quarter of the way in. Or... actually, please let go of them.

"Arguing about Lady Gaga." The most basic of basic bitchery. Strike one for this book. Is this is what normal people do? Argue about pop albums, "interpret" Ariana Grande lyrics. Smash patriarchy by quoting Taylor Swift (well done, himbo Booktuber!) I'm not sure I want to read about them.

I think I'm done. Everyone raves about this book, and I actually like the author going by the two other novels of his that I've read. But I don't think I can go on, I don't want to read about some barely relevant xenian politics or Griss Twist or a million other things I can't remember and aren't at all relevant to the central mystery/horror. I like Isaac. I love Lin. But New Crobuzon I'm completely done with.
