Nathaniel Starbuck, a young Northerner stranded in Richmond as the Civil War begins, is swept into the orbit of Washington Faulconer, a wealthy Virginian raising his own Confederate regiment. Broke and directionless, Starbuck joins the Faulconer Legion, facing suspicion as an outsider while struggling through early training and tense personalities.
