the usual prissy dinner parties, "scandalous" bullshit, and characters whose singular pursuit in life is to play parkour games or eat lavish dinners while sizing up who marries whom for their money. I'm hanging with it but trust me, it's mostly a lot of blithering babble and I'm guessing nothing of any dramatic urgency or depth is going to transpire within these pages. Next comes the "ball" of course...

Second attempt at reading this, and so far so good. Like most of VW's books it takes a bit more focus and attention than more easily read fare. I found "Orlando" to be her most accessible thus far; she plays with your imagination in it but it was not taxing to read or follow. "To the Lighthouse" has a lot of emotional nuance along with a lot of detailed and often metaphorical description. Hope the journey is worth it

reading this as research for a creative project involving music. It's a cool book thus far. Love the connection native American tribes had with nature.

got 40 pages into it and the library would not let me renew it as someone else was requesting it; can easily pick back up later, compelling enough to finish.

each story surprises and entertains in a different way; this book sort of looks like it might be be a dated and stuffy slog, but it's not at all. This woman must have been borderline insane to come up with all these stories and details in her imagination.

cool book, enjoying it; wonderful as both wildly imaginative fantasy and biting political satire.

this one's a keeper; the stories, especially the ghost stories, are great. Thought she would be stuffy and too dry for my taste, but it's good stuff.

Think I'm getting into this; will at least explore some of her short stories. As writers go, she was certainly the real deal and churned out a lot of work (must've been an amazingly disciplined lady!)

I don't know which is slower going....the much-challenged clan trying to transport their matron's body to her chosen burial site or my reading of this bizarrely written book. Either way, the end is in sight but I cannot yet say if it will have been worth the journey or not.

this book takes its time to get where it's going, and I am taking my time in reading it; it's good, but not a page-turner for me.

I am reading two books called Invisible Man at once. The similarities are surprising actually. Wells' is the simpler of of the two, Ellison's a heavier reading experience..

This one is a "slow read" for me; it's good, it's gritty, but it's also familiar; I can see where it's going, it's brave and essential and noble at a time when I am more in the mood for whimsical and weird and no particular message. I get it: racism is pervasive because it's taught generation to generation: Racism sucks. I will finish this book in due time, it's a classic.

OK. finally changed this to the Signet edition I'm reading. The Count is one wily spider in a web VERY populated with characters. Don't read this fried.
