soooooo good, oh I hope the rest of Norrell's books are just like this!

So far this is more 'biographical sketches of famous food people' than actually talking about why and how the sociological/cultural changes happened, but it's still really enjoyable.

This was fine and then suddenly it got weirdly numinous and reminded me of The Raven Boys (this is NOT speculative, though) and now I love it.

One chapter a week is my new way to read dense-for-me non-fiction, and it is working like a charm.

Oh dear this seems to be Diana apologia, as though the fact that 'Sir Oswald wanted peace in 1939' (ie: didn't want England to go to war with Nazi Germany) was somehow a GOOD thing. I am still reading but not certain for how much longer -- ignoring the Mosleys' fascism is disingenuous at best.

I am reading this at a leisurely pace and really enjoying the atmosphere & descriptions.

First reread! I'm enjoying it even more this time through, now that I understand the society & stakes better.
