Attempting to read this because of its significance in Diana Wynne Jones’s “Fire and Hemlock.” It’s kind of rough going so far, but the descriptions in tonight’s reading of a wide variety of superstitions around the world did get me thinking—how wonderful to be able to rely on an almighty God for food, safety, etc., instead of a host of “magical” rituals and taboos!

Reading these a few at a time—they take some chewing on! Favorites so far have been “Supposed Confessions of a Second-rate Sensitive Mind” (gorgeous “wrestling with God” poem in the midst of grief and turmoil) and “Mariana” (deliciously eerie, and with some early hints of ideas later explored more fully in “The Lady of Shalott”).
