Bit of trouble with brevity and generalisations but aware that is because the other two earlier Aust works I am reading seem better. But too early to say conclusively.

Scanning through, cherry picking chapters. On a family history journey. I am 4th generation on from first arrival, and following 5th and 6th generations. I grew up where the relics and artifacts of these families were still inside the big old houses from my maternal family past, and had visited homes like these described. There are familiar names, local but not family. Shades too of Gerald Murnane’s The Plains.
