Really nice turnaround in feel at about the halfway point. Curious where it will go...

This book reminds me of seeing the movie the tree of life by Terrence Malick—only a little ways in but I can tell it is special. It is also especially writerly. My impression is this is a writers writer. This is my first Powers book. It will not be my last.

Couldn't finish. Got too raw. Unenjoyable. Limit to gross-out and blue-out verbiage.

This is part Garrison Keillor, part southern gothic, part Southern Baptist sermon about 50 pages in. I am listening on audio book.

Had to quit at 25%. The narration was entirely distracting and unpleasant to me. I love the interview on Other People Podcast with author. I will find him again down the road.

Way sadder and better than I imagined. Huck's father is a great ancestor of Dwight Yoakham's 'Doyle' in SLINGBLADE (1996)

At first I was worried I'd wandered into a feminine scorched earth that would not be particularly satisfying. Wrong. There are some stories that can only be described as "human". This is such. I wonder what the second half of the book will bring--because I know more than I could have imagined about a particular emotional abyss. This is interesting stuff. That the author is reading---adds to the drama.

So enjoying this read -- writing is sparse, sometimes cold. Pleasantly efficient. Some Scarlet Letter/Tess D'Urbeville in early chapters. All much affecting thus far.

I sincerely love this book. I understand the criticisms of it not being hugely actionable and perhaps overly observationable. But it is interested in a variety of cultural commentary -- I am finding these bits compelling and creative and uplifting, especially characterization around class and money. This satisfies what I want in post-modern literature. A lot of DFW, Jeff Eugenides, and Chuck Klosterman-bits.

I love how this story gives deep drama and troubled characters through three distinct times and places--the 17th century Netherlands, the 1950s old money New York City, and the 2000s in Sydney, AUS. All is linked through a single painting.

Writing is quite weak so far--using extensive swearwords--just plain boring after a point, dammit.

So far, author Eben Alexander brought a lot of intellect to this follow-up. I am really enjoying the philosophical heft here. Some nice ideas on consciousness this far.
