This book is so good! Wish I could read faster…but life + compulsive annotating means this will take me a bit.

Laura is starting Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom
Barely started and already shook by the shocking contrast to hooks' experience in schools before integration and after. "That shift from beloved all-black schools to white schools, where black students were always seen as interlopers - as not really belonging - taught me the difference between education as the practice of freedom and education that merely strives to reinforce domination"

I don't know what to expect from this book, but so far it reads like an anthropological analysis of the United States in the 2016 election (and way more) - with a slightly ironic tone (at least on the narrator's part) and it's fascinating. And scary.

7 minutes into this book and I'm 100% hooked! Listening to this and the narrator is amazing - I know I'll want to get a copy of the physical book too because I already wish I could have highlighted so many parts!

This is not a light read. I started in Spanish and switched to English because oh man - the vocabulary is rich and challenging. The ideas though - they are worth the effort. Reading this as I read Kendi's work is interesting because they compliment each other so well - right now still more in the theory section that the application - but enjoying this! Wish I had read it sooner!

Slowly but surely. The chapter on Class really shook me. I never realized just how connected capitalism and racism were. Shook. Me. It's obvious when you think about it, but obviously our schools don't teach economics with this lens. I took so many economics courses in college - none of them addressed this. Politics courses didn't either. How can that be? Is it deliberate? Willful ignorance?

This book is so good! Sometimes I just pause the audiobook to savor the imagery. The craft in this book is exquisite and raw. I can definitely imagine analyzing excerpts with students. Will finish today!

Taking notes for further reflection, but I can't copy nearly 3 pages on the racist history of standardized testing. It's much more insidious than I realized. As a teacher this is tough to read. I always hate when we lose huge amounts of time to testing, but now it seems like more than an unfair waste of time. It is a system that maintains and perpetuates racism in education.

So far this book is an easier read than I expected. I'm still not zooming through as I'm actually reading the book and not listening to it.
Kendi contextualized language and history through his own story and through exposition - it is a nice blend that keeps it personal and big picture.
I'm taking a lot of notes. Kendi's exploration of racism in his own life and mind is an invitation to me to do the same.

I already am loving this book. It fits in so well with the Mathematical Mindsets book. It makes me wish I had my own classroom to go back to and try these things out in.
