okay I can already tell this will not be a winner.... but oh my god it's so fucking funny

this book is nominally about the keystone XL pipeline. every time we get to a place where ken could TALK about the keystone it gets passed over in a handful of words. the meeting he was so desperate to get to took up less than two pages. his travels with Rick, a real environmental activist, were less about his wisdom on the environment and more about Ken liking folksy aphorisms.

I have a friend who is reading this with me and we have talked a lot about how Ken seems to not have any real opinions about global warming beyond it being bad and in that way I think he is deeply representative of a lot of people like him; nominally liberal men who are quite conservative at their core but nod about women's rights while not voting for them and harboring secret fear of The Gays

why does Ken Ilgunas think that living in a small town makes you less horny? hey ken why do you think that?

I talk down on Ken a lot, mostly because I think he's a self righteous dipshit who lacks the moral backbone to stand by any single one of his values, but his musings on the right to roam and our national obsession with private property is interesting and depressing in equal measure. our country is so set on Ownership and Possession that the average person is denied access to so much land it's almost criminal.

I don't want to tell Ken how to do his job but I don't think a sub 300 page memoir about HIKING THE KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE needs TEN PAGES ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE GREAT PLAINS. makes it seem like you, Ken, don't actually have a lot of stuff to write about.

i read on my breaks at work and I'll often go to my coworker after my break to update them with what is happening in the book. for this book I have taken to walking over to her after my break and loudly announcing 'THE ADVENTURES OF THE WORLD'S MOST ANNOYING MAN CONTINUE'

not to be mean. but. ken ilgunas seems like the most insufferable human being on the face of the planet. woe be to anyone who has to sit next to him on a plane.

Freddie Dewitt is the actual scariest character in this book

I want to say I'm not DISAPPOINTED but I'm a little underwhelmed so far. I think the book just needs a little time to warm up.
