This series makes me wish literal death upon an 8 year-old child.

Currently going through the process of removing friends who have not logged in for the past 5+ years. This is so depressing. Goodreads used to be such an active, bustling community of book and writing discussions for me. Now it’s a dead city filled with the empty remnants of your friends’ homes.

I seriously don’t get why this is a constant thing the characters/writer is trying to push to us. . .that the demon/spirit/thing CHOSE Malik to kill the princess. But he DIDN’T though. His sistrer broke some kinda spirit law by receiving a gift, and in order to free her, Malik OFFERS to do a task for the spirit. Stop it with this “chosen” nonsense.

This makes zero sense. Idris doesn’t think you, of all people, can kill the princess. It was YOU who bargained to do anything for him in exchange for your sister. That says NOTHING of his faith in your capabilities.

Is it Karina’s hand in marriage? Is that the “grand prize”? With all that talk of marriage just a paragraph or two ago, it just seems like such an OBVIOUS set-up now. Sigh.

Does anybody know how (or if it’s still possible) to close the comments in one of your reviews?

Just an example of the quality of dialogue we’ve got in this book—dialogue is (clumsily) used to (try to) lead us to certain opinions/attitudes/conclusions about the subject of said dialogue:

So the wedding scene is basically one huge worldbuilding infodump AND detailed descriptions of clothes.

Every single time I finish a book and post a review, 5 secs later I'd receive an e-mail from Goodreads asking me what's next. Like whoa, slow down tiger, some of us have full time jobs and responsibilites.

Three chapters in and we have Threat-of-Rape(™) upon the main character. Please please pleeeease let this be the first and last of YA Romantasy cliches in this book.

So Fatima GHAZALA names a new ifrit into human-form, and SURPRISE, SURPRISE, Ifrit-lady just soooo happens to be Zulfikar’s ex lover, and—well would you look at that—she’s come to “reclaim” him oOoooOoOOo I did NOT SEE THIS COMING Y’ALL LIKE FML DO WE NEED ANY MORE CLICHE YA BEATS IN THIS BOOK!?

Yeah, my patience is wearing thin.

Shining the spotlight here on the maharajah/empire’s entire incompetence. Unfortunately it does not excuse it nor mask it from the fact that it is a plot device. Everything that happens from this point forwards, in regards to civil war/rebellion, is a product of the king’s sheer incompetence.

Umm . . . no? You have not? You've been constantly snapping at him; being petulant and threatening to "Go home" over the slightest turn of phrase he uses that could if-only-vaguely-by-a-toenail be interpreted as potentially-misogynistic; refuse to follow him or do as he asks despite your entire life just turning upside-down; so no, you have not been patient.

Also, if you can’t tell by how suh-loooowwww my reading progress has been, I keep procrastinating trying to read this book. The inciting incident (or one of them, at least) has already happened chapters ago... but it’s still a slow trudge through action-less prose.

I don’t like the turn Fatima’s character underwent. Not only for the complete 180 change, rendering Fatima 1.0 and all previous chapters pretty much useless, but also Fatima 2.0 is hard to read—hard to feel as a character.

She speaks, internal-monologues like a matter-of-fact robot, but in the next moment will be crying, enraged, self-questioning, only to settle back into nonchalance in a matter of paragraphs.

Oooo look out, we got a woke boiii here .......

Nevermind how much we're bashed over the head with his "woke"ness, my main issue is with yet another romantasy trope of having some sleazy, potential minor villain in lust with the heroine.

I didn't know this was gonna be THAT kind of book. Ultra disappointing.

Even if I'm wrong, seeing that Firdaus gave her his flame before dying, wouldn't this be an educated assumption? How is this theory not the first thing to pop into Zulfikar's mind?!

See, predictability is not (necessarily) an issue. It's characters not seeing/suspecting the obvious that is.
