Too much packed in, so far, along with obstinate characters. Fun though, in a distracted sort of way.

I always feel disappointed when a well built up horror tale turns to the supernatural for explanations. Just feels like copping out. Real people who want to kill you are always more dangerous than this supernatural thing ordaining to maybe kill you.

It is rare in life that you reach page 501 of a book and realize that you are just about half way in.

It felt like a giddy adventure at the start, now it has moved into bureaucracy. Just read through a 50 page discussion on whether some mountain tribes should be classified as jews. Back and forth between the Wehrmacht and the SS.

Emil Borkhausen and Enno Kluge are two of the ugliest, dirtiest characters in fiction. Such unlikely criminals, and yet so real. You are half sympathizing and half disgusted at them. I caught myself wishing I was the Gestapo inspector to beat the shit out of the two.

It is an incredible experience, reading this book. The fear, the terror in everyday things is manifest in just a few words. It is an incredibly cinematic book, such that you FEEL everything.

It is an incredibly paced book too, chapter-by-chapter you move through characters but none of it is exposition. You are introduced, a thought is suggested.

Amazing to believe so much adrenaline injected in such a simple book

I am sorry, but world war 2 atrocities in other parts of the war theater, sound jokingly light when you have read about the Germans and the KL.

The central idea different to every other book I have read on the topic is the usage of the KL as currency, both political and manpower. Immense value in being the holder of this currency. Also, the very human motivations of the leaders in SS.

While reading this, I want to slow it down sometimes, slow it down so much that you feel each day, each moment. It is a failed endeavor. Everyone across the world should have a reminder for each of the days of the year. This is what happened in that KL this day of the year.

It is overwhelming, this fine tome.
