So far, there's been a lot of telling, complete with the "magical mentor" figure telling Xifeng that she must choose the red pill or the blue / the Dark or the Light side, along with a "creature" inside her that's responsible for all of her dark impulses.

One (of the many) that's driving me nuts is the italicized internal thoughts, when is already a first-person narrator. It isn't necessary.
