Book Two Pip is not as amicable as Book One Pip. The writing still glistens, though.

Brilliant so far. Such delightful prose. It's good to be walking down Dickens Street again.

This story is absolutely dear and delightful. So simple, but not a wasted sentence or a single throwaway character.

Okay, I've had enough duds in 2021. Time to close out the year with something that is actually good.

It sure is awful when a character you really like and are hoping will be one of the featured ones in a series gets killed in a heart-wrenching way.

Great writing. Tons of detail. Dialogue and characters feel more contemporary than classical. Still very good, though.

This one is a little like a fantasy version of Canticle for Leibowitz without all the quirkiness and contemplation. The feel is similar, though it's considerably more action-based and plot driven. I'm not sure fans of Canticle would necessarily appreciate this one or see the similarities as anything more than superficial. But that's the book that keeps coming to mind for me as I read this.

So far, great writing. And also, I think it's pretty clear where this is going. But that's not always a bad thing. I for one don't mind a more allegorical/symbolic story.

Taking a short break from reading, well on Goodreads, anyway. The book I am reading now does not exist anywhere beyond my own little corner of the universe. But what a nice little corner it is.

Elwin Random is the only science-fiction protagonist I am aware of whose primary reaction upon encountering alien life is thrill at the possibility of learning the rules of their language. Ah, those nutty philologists!

Yes and yes and yes. Like Matthew, I could go on just listening to Anne chatter for the rest of the novel. I don't even care what happens as long as Anne is in it.

Not only have I not read any of the nominees for the Goodreads Choice Awards Best Fantasy book, I haven't even heard of any of them. Has anyone else read or heard of these books, or were they beamed down from the sci-fi planet? Honestly, some of the covers don't even look like they're fantasy.
