The jealousy that I feel for Ryland Grace is honestly distracting.

Dickens is an absolute master at writing rich, sympathetic, lifelike characters. I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do it as well as he does. I keep finishing kind of mundane passages of dialogue, or first-person narrative, and having tears well up in my eyes because it’s just so… alive.

This is not an indictment of Weir’s writing at all, but reading contemporary prose after a long line of classics (and Judith Butler’s mercilessly academic style) actually feels like reading a book for babies. Perfect for me and where my seasonal depression brain are at right now.

A beautiful book full of repugnant characters.

So continues my tour through the 1800s. Loving this book already as well. The character writing of this era is just unmatched.

Wow. So glad that this book is nearly 1000 pages. Even so, I don’t think I’ll be ready for it to be over when it is.
