We’ve known each other since we were boys; we went to school together. He was one of my closest friends, with thick glasses, reddish hair that he hated, and a voice that cracked when he was emotional.

Olga je naime bila od onih modernih žena koje se vole razdvajati na biće koje osjeća i biće koje promatra.

Razlika je bila između mekanog i grubog, između želje da se ukloni distanca i želje da se ona očuva. Bilo je to pitanje vrijednosti. Noću svijetli još samo nebo. Obasjava kuće, nebodere, telegrafske stupove, promiče kroz granje, tušem iscrtava prilike rijetkih prolaznika, to dobro nebo, brana od mraka.

Koren sve umetnosti, a možda i svega duha nalazi se u strahu od smrti. Mi je se bojimo, jeza nas obuzima od prolaznosti, i u sopstvenom srcu osećamo izvesnost da smo i mi prolazni i da ćemo uskoro uvenuti. Pa ako kao umetnici stvaramo kipove ili kao mislioci tražimo zakone i formulišemo misli, da bismo ipak makar nešto spasili iz velikog mrtvačkog kola, ostavili nešto što će biti trajnije od nas samih.

Jer život je, na kraju krajeva, samo čekanje da se dogodi nešto drugo od onoga što radimo, a smrt je ono na što se možemo osloniti.

Other people teach us who we are. Their attitudes to us are the mirror in which we learn to see ourselves, but the mirror is distorted.
