I liked this better the second time around, having actively shaped some living spaces over the past few years. Our decision never to have a TV in the living room was all about wanting the space to be reserved for interaction, for example. Her writing is lovely, her observational skills unmatched. Her fascination with the history of furniture- less intriguing.

This is my first try with Salman Rushdie; his Satanic Verses infamy made him intimidating. By p. 2 I was enjoying his cheeky wit and undeniable sophistication. As the plot got layered and characters multiplied, I wasn't quite hooked - until suddenly about 50 pps in, I was. The passage is too long to copy and too masterful for me to describe, except to say: This takeoff on the Quijote does justice to its inspiration.
