Needed to take a break from this book. It was too visceral and real and not a good read when I was sick and my mind was already spiraling. Hernandez has done such a good job with these characters that the anxiety and trauma feels incredibly, heartbreakingly real.

Okay. I think I'm finally ready. Like the Broken Earth, this is a fantastic series that has mentally broken me every book (and reading Babel did not help - though you absolutely should read one of the greatest stand alone modern fantasies ever). Enough time, and less soul crushing books, have passed that I am ready. Break my heart again R F Kuang.

Really enjoying this so far. Feels real and almost alternate history rather than a possible future. There's certainly comparisons to be made with Gilead from A Handmaid's Tale in terms of a Canadian Author talking about a possible future of our Southern Neighbors, especially one as well realized as this.
