Beautiful annalistic stuff. This book is a reign by reign series of bios of the occupants of the chair of Saint Peter, dating into the middle ages. All of it - especially the early period - is dubious factually, but accurate and revealing as a history of the Church's internal perception of itself and its officers.

It's hard to get into this book. The organisation is opaque. And I don't quite understand whether OSP initiatives functionally as operating system or somehow is one. To put it differently, are the Java classes in OSP just pale imitations of say Linux or are they somehow real?

Rereading this for about the seventh time. Beautiful writing, amazing ideas.
