Just finished the chapter on Beirut. Feeling the helplessness of financial troubles myself, so this one was particularly relatable. The war zones are - thankfully, blessedly - not something I have endured, but all of the situations in this book are so aching and sharply pointed, and so well illustrated that you can feel yourself there. Every time I read it again I am ashamed of my comparably safe life.

This is going to be a difficult book to get through if I read it in public like I am right now. I'm waiting in a doctor's office lobby for a friend to finish their appointment, and I really wish I'd brought a simpler or less thought-provoking book to read. I don't want to cry in front of these strangers.

It's a little heavy-handed, but not in an overbearing way yet. I'm hoping it'll stay this good. I like all the characters (except Mila, she's too strange for me). But this is also reminding me that I want to be an author.

But like... I am starting to agree with Nilsson.

I'm fully in this book's grasp. It's surprisingly and subtly funny, and I love how modern it is (ChatGPT being almost a character onto itself). The characters are great, too, as well as the plot (it's generally and organically thrilling how Amy's plight is created, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here!).

The back and forth timelines are cool to follow, especially with multiple perspectives. I've liked seeing characters from different angles.

8 minutes in and I've already laughed and seen some plot information snuck in organically. I liked the sequel (not knowing it was one at the time), so it's not surprising I like this one already.

So it had a slow beginning, getting to know the characters and the setting and all that. But the tension is so palpable right now and everything is coming to such a crescendo with all of the plot movements converging and... this book owns me right now. I hope the ending delivers.
