Hayleigh is starting Magic Hour
I’ve liked other Hannah books, but I’m struggling here. There are at least a few mentions of female characters’ weights on every page. The book is 20 years old, so outdated ways of referring to people w autism (like “an autistic”) have been hard to get past. The plot’s potential is keeping me going for now, but I’m about to throw the book if another woman’s weight is mentioned/disparaged.

You know. There aren’t a lot of “nice” 9/11 stories, but this one is about how a tiny town in Newfoundland stepped up to take care of people whose planes were grounded, and it is so uplifting to read about kindness right now. Literally giving away the food from their fridges, giving up bedrooms and showers. It’s a beautiful story.

Honestly, I’m dropping it because I didn’t realize it was going to be soooo much about digging laws, and I was REALLY thrown off when 1) the author, a forensic anthropologist, had never head the Civil War called “The War of Northern Aggression” before and 2) She compared whether Black trauma or Native trauma re: grave disruption was worse (like that’s quantifiable or necessary to pit against each other?)
