Attempting to understand a criminal's mind is perhaps a fruitless pursuit, but so is understanding the public's response. These stories are mind-boggling.

I'm curious as to how much Rebekah Morris gathered from her own personal family history, because I cannot fathom a single convincing reason that an American farmer, established father of several children, would choose to join the military forces overseas during World War I. I can't imagine it was that common.

So ... I don't think I'm finishing this book (at chapter 4). Totally not my usual course of action, but I have other books I want to read.

Being the 4th book in the series (but first one I read), this did not capture my attention, and there was too much swearing for me to comfortably give this to a non-adult.

Sarah is in the middle of a terrible war, and is she worried about her refugee status, or living in Union-occupied territory? No, she's ripping herself apart for pages about receiving letters from a man and not being able to respond. Some problems transcend time, no matter how dire the surrounding circumstances.

Sarah ruminating on the prospect of marriage:
"I am content with my brothers; what do I care for a stranger? At all events, not yet!"

Well said, Sarah. Well said.

Lesson from one certain entry: nasty women are nasty, no matter if they agree with your politics or are "on your side." Conclusion: don't be a nasty woman.

Annabelle is the farthest thing from a "loyal American." Loyal Americans have an understanding of the Constitution, and she is completely ignorant. Gray is 100% right: she is naïve, and a poster child for why women should stay away from politics.

Unfortunately, though Annabelle is completely in the wrong, Gray's (presumably) correct perspective is really not presented well. I don't like the direction this is going.
