You would think after how she died and the 100 years later, our protagonist would have had some growth by now. I'm intrigued by Jorge's moral compass and intuition while frustrated with Graciela's recklessness.

There are hints of magical realism-- which definitely helped the storyline thus far-- but not enough. Every chapter and POV is... miserable. The magical realism elements gave hints to what could be greater purpose for each of the characters. However, because the looming of magic isn't as prevalent as their lead-ups seem to be, the chapters feel falling short. Maybe there'll be a better tie in in this latter half.

"Canon's point is that under colonization, none of us can breathe. When we recognize that, we can all struggle for breath together."

While I am enjoying the content of the book and learning about her Indigenous backgrounds' historical connections to nature, I am having difficulty reading as the narrative is super repetitive.

"Whose story do we believe, then? We believe the one who has the power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history, you must always ask yourself, whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured that out, you must find that story too. From there, you begin to get a clearer yet still imperfect picture."
