Besides orientalism I am blindsided by the awful treatment of green politics. The dystopia is rife with pandemics and climate crisis. The ministry overseeing action is shown taking bribes or assaulting people. The enforcement actions are quarantines, carbon offsets and trade restrictions. It feels like the faction was written as violent and bigoted so capitalist trade systems seem the better option in the story. :/

Romans, countrymen, friends: I need your help. I have bounced off this book HARD about 15 years ago. As speculative fiction, the concepts were great and are groundbreaking genre fiction even now.

*monkey's paw curls* Except that the characters and tropes were so steeped in orientalism I didn't make it past 160. I have had visceral rage while reading this.
