This book was very long -- around 750 pages, I think. I hardly noticed the length because it was so good. It follows several generations of women from about 1880s Palestine through the 1950s in America. It deals with heartache, questionable parentage, lost loves and duty. It's really a beautiful story. Sometimes in multigenerational books I find the transitions between characters jolting, but not this one.
