Aunt Bean is giving Aunt Josephine from Little Women (1994) vibes. I can picture this entire conversation with that actress in place of Aunt Bean.

Appreciated the criticism of His Needs, Her Needs, which we read during premarital counseling and seemed to imply that if your spouse leaves, it’s your fault for not meet his/her needs.

“In both commands—submit and love—the focus is on what we give, not on what we get.”

The arguments in chapters 3 and 4 were much more solid, and the discussion on those controversial passages in Corinthians was helpful.

I’m complementarian, but his arguments didn’t really connect. First he says be careful not to make patterns prescriptive, then he does just that. For example, we know the men mistreated women (mentioned in pattern 4) because of other scripture (not mentioned), but pattern 1 (male leadership) would benefit from how we know this from scripture, as the pattern itself can be explained away by a patriarchal society.

“The man and women were given joint rule over creation.” I’m not sure I’ve actually heard that stated. Always assumed the position was male rule with female help.

So far not sure I’m enjoying. It’s well written, but a bit too icky for my taste. I don’t mind realism, but it just feels dark and awful and I have this feeling the rest of the book will be more of the same.

Still feels like Cutter Gap. 😏

It’s giving Christy vibes as the story begins. Since that is my favorite book, I’m super excited to continue reading this story.

Struggling with the letter writing format.

No slow moments. No obligatory reading, hoping the story would finally pull me in (looking at you fantasy genre 😅). From the first page I was invested and could barely put it down!

Pretty invested, but I can still put it down. Getting a bit suspicious of Kelsier. His actions seem increasingly shady.

Getting better. Why is fantasy always such a slow start? (In all fairness, it’s getting to the action much faster than a lot of fantasy.). Still difficult to picture the setting—hotel? carpet? Feels a bit like Star Wars meets Regency England meets League of Extraordinary gentlemen meets City of Ember. Did see a sword mentioned—but no sight of horses yet.

The Allomancy/tin burning is weird (original, though), but going with it for now.

So far great descriptions and writing. Humorous. Pulls you in.
