I am 1/3 of the way through the Fujo 9/11 Book that everybody was raving about and I can already tell this is going to go brilliant and horrible places

First sentence of the first story talks about the corvette museum sinkhole so naturally I’m frothing at the mouth ready to go already!!!

Literally everything they say about this book is true like it’s so confusing and full of fantasy stuff and then you reach the last 1/3 and it’s like BOOM and totally shatters your heart. Like… Griddle…………

So far really fun, when I can figure out what’s going on. Craft-wise, this book is reminding me that heavy-handed exposition to a fantasy world can actually be a good and necessary thing. Because, uh, there is none here. I spent way too much time confused. The romance, though!!! Wow!!!!

"In her mind she was recognizing all the machinations that had been whirling around her, remembering tiny details that she thought she had forgotten, and that now acquired new significance." screaming crying throwing up

“The word “hysteria” was always spoken with irony, as if it was too backward and un-feminist to merit discussion. .… Apparently, the thing that had been giving people hysteria was repressive Victorian norms. We didn’t have those norms anymore, so we didn’t have hysteria, either.”

“Well, that’s just it, I thought: you didn’t just write down a raw cry of suffering. It would be boring and self-indulgent. You had to disguise it, turn it into art. That’s what literature was.” BACK AT IT AGAIN!

“I thought there was something wrong with the way the departments and majors were organized. Why were the different branches of literature categorized by geography and language, while sciences were categorized by the level of abstraction, or by the size of the object of study? Why wasn’t literature classified by word count? Why wasn’t science classified by country?” LET’S GOOOOOOOO

i started reading this for a class, and then the professor, sensing our discomfort with the subject matter, changed the assigned reading, for which i was grateful, because it was kind of an impossible book to discuss. still gonna finish it though, because i feel like i can't really proclaim a judgement on it 'til i've finished.

When he talks about his interview with Kobe Bryant (RIP) and how they talk about the movie Whiplash and Kobe says “that’s me”... I understand now.

I love science fiction that lets me pretend I understand radio astronomy
