Borges reveals what the secret rite exercised by a pagan sect from his story "The Sect of the Phoenix" actually was. I didn't pick up on it when I first read the story, soldiering through Ficciones with my nascent Spanish. Now, this line "it is understood that all words name it or, rather, inevitably allude to it" brings to mind Oscar Wilde's famous (apocryphal?) quote. Yep, it's sex.
