I can't decide if I want to DNF this or not... It's SO repetitive so far and the reviews I just read don't give me a ton of hope that pushing through it going to be worth it.

I unpacked a big box of books from childhood and am rereading some of them. This one is much better so far than "There's a Bat in Bunk Five," which was the one I started first. A lot of fatphobia though.

Listening to this as an audiobook, which is honestly the only reason I have made it this far. It is interesting, but my goodness, that first half was a slog! So many random details about related family members, living conditions, and very technical rowing details. It set the scene, though. And so I can see and appreciate why it was all included. They just arrived in Germany and only 16% of the story to go!

Well the first few chapters were alright... but Chapter 5 read like Trump writing an inspirational self-help speech. Honestly slightly shocked these ratings are so high... Are the next 140 pages that much of a game-changer? Because right now we're sitting at about 2 stars. And those were both earned in chapter 4.

ABSOLUTELY. LOVING. THIS. Don't want it to be over and don't want to stop reading, but need to go to sleep. Definitely did not predict this would be in my top 5 for the year, but it definitely is. This is going on my favorite's shelf.

I've been listening to the audiobook of this book. There's a lot of nitty gritty detailing of personal histories, which has been dull at times, but I think is necessary for showing just how hard some of these boys had it growing up. They definitely don't fit with the typical rower stereotype. Curious to see how this pans out with them going to Germany eventually!
